A small wooden home cutout sits in the snow with a heart cut out of the middle of it. Holiday lights and gifts are blurred in the background.

We are in the final countdown to 2024, and with that comes the end-of-the-year holiday craziness. From a variety of school activities to winter break, to family gatherings, and so much more, it is easy to get overwhelmed just looking at the calendar. And in that hustle and bustle, sometimes we forget a few health and safety basics.

Many of us will be traveling to a variety of events, programs, parties, and more in the next few weeks. Be sure to wash your hands and it isn’t too late to get your flu, COVID, pneumonia, or RSV vaccines (if you are eligible) while you are out finishing that holiday shopping. No one wants to give the gift of illness for the holidays.

Cooking comes with a variety of safety challenges. We see an increase in fires around Thanksgiving and Christmas, many of which start in the kitchen. Never leave a stove or oven unattended and be sure to keep the kids a safe distance from knives or stoves. Kitchens can also be a transmitter of foodborne illnesses. Despite what your mother-in-law told you, you don’t need to rinse that chicken! Be sure to cook foods to the proper temperatures and refrigerate those leftovers within two hours.

You may be visiting grandma’s house or re-living a “Christmas Vacation”-like fun at yours. Be sure to double-check those smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to help keep everyone safe while you enjoy the hap-hap-happiest holiday and that beautiful exterior lighting expertise.

As you are out and about finishing that holiday shopping, or celebrating with friends, be sure to lock your vehicle and keep any purchases or packages out of sight. If your plans keep you out after dark, be sure to park in a well-lit area and if you drink, plan for a designated driver. While it might seem like a good idea to leave the car running while you run in for that last goodbye or the leftovers you forgot on the counter – this is a good opportunity for a Grinch-like character to put a damper on your fun and take that vehicle.

So, join us in a quick deep breath, and let’s end 2023 strong. There is a lot of stress this time of year. Don’t forget to find time to sleep and take care of yourself too!
